Background
Windows began in 1992 with writers Noel Monahan, Heather Brett and Simion D. (pictured above). They initiated a publishing outlet to promote and publish the best of contemporary literature in Ireland and abroad – with emphasis on young writers and the emerging voice.
Windows Broadsheet first appeared in Autumn 1992. Following broadsheets published poetry in translation from Europe and poems in the Irish language. Windows specialised in placing the work of established writers alongside emerging talent. From the outset Windows received financial support and backing from Monaghan County Council .
Windows Poetry Readings. Windows organised readings and launches that took place throughout Ireland, travelling the length and breath of the countryside – again placing emerging writers to read alongside the more established authors. In 15 years Windows has held over 150 events – from the Blaskets to Belfast and from Achill to Dublin.
W.P.Monthly was a literature and arts journal that opened its Windows to contributors from all over the world in 1996 with a range of subjects from literature and criticism to music, visual arts and an events guide.
Windows/Cavan Crystal Annual National Student Poetry Competition is now in its 15th year and one of the most popular attracting thousands of entries each year
from students throughout Ireland. Local business Cavan Crystal are also
celebrating sponsoring the competition for the past five years.
Windows Authors & Artists Introduction Series (click on image, then hover mouse on image to see slide show) published a number of emerging writers with work by emerging visual artists, with space given for exhibitions at readings. To date Windows have published six of the Introductions series and two anthology selections.
