From Ballycastle to Berlin –
New artists featured in Windows Publications.

Cavan Crystal Hotel Thursday 1st October at 8pm

Raymond Watson and Elena Duff are two of the artists in the new Windows anthology. Their styles could not be more different. Raymond, from Ballycastle and based in Belfast , has a stark and disturbing eye for this series of portrayals of Long Kesh prison. The paintings resonate absence loudly and conjure immense power to the ordinary paraphernalia of prison life…the scrap of letter or the water bottle. These paintings are just one of the facets of Raymond’s artistic career- he has travelled to many countries with art projects for students and in Belfast has just completed a Peace Flag initiative in several schools.
Elena Duff graduated from Dublin in 1995 and has lived in Virgina with her mother Honor Duff who also contributes to the anthology with her poetry. She currently resides in Berlin and her work is as she says herself…obsessive , complex and joyful. Stunning abstract forms in layers are woven through more natural shapes with a wonderful use of intense colour. Her titles are just as different…’Push lever …Release Egg’ is one of my favourite.
Both artists work can be seen during the launch of the 9th Authors & Artists Introduction Series when editor Heather Brett will be joined by guests Jack Keyes, Rita Kelly, Philip Casey and several contributors including Brendan Mc Cann, who will read from their work. Enquiries 086 0650908
Eileen, who is a music graduate of NUI Maynooth, is known for her arranging skills and along with Bens unusual songwriting talent the couple produce an uplifting and unique sound – praised by Sonny Condell of ‘Scullion’. Gigs have included the Le Cheile and Flat Lakes Festivals.

Reading in Cavan on the night will be Irene O Dea, Aisling Murtagh and Brendan McCannwith an address by Mr Jack Keyes, Cavan County Manager.
Guests alsdo include writer Rita Kelly from Kildare and novelist Philip Casey from Dublin who will be doing a lunchtime reading in Crannog Bookshop as part of All Ireland Poetry Day.
The evening will be hosted by Heather Brett and is the second of the six launches organised by Windows. Wine will be served and everyone is welcome.

Philip Casey and Rita Kelly
All Ireland Poetry Day sponsored by Poetry Ireland with assistance from Cavan County Council aims to bring poetry and creativity just that little bit closer with a huge nationwide campaign to have poetry readings at local venues in every county in Ireland. Last year Fred Johnston and Mary O’ Donnell visited Cavan and joined Heather Brett for a lunchtime reading. This year Heather will introduce writers Rita Kelly and Philip Casey in Crannog bookshop at 1pm.

Rita – originally from Galway and living in Athy in Co Kildare is no stranger to Cavan – having once been Writer- in -Residence here. She writes poetry, fiction, drama and criticism in both Irish and English and has just completed an MA in Creative Writing at WIT.

This will be London-born Philip Casey’s first visit to Cavan. Philip grew up in Wexford but has lived in Dublin for the past 30 years. Philip is a novelist and poet with three novels and four collections published, the latest entitled ‘Dialogue in Fading Light’.
